Looking for my Mo-Jo

I think I need to avoid malls in general for a few months. I have been a shopping fool and I am loving it. I used to hate to shop since I could only go to a few stores. Granted I can't fit into all stores but I am widening my options.

It sucks I haven't lost any weight lately since I have been pushing myself by starting to do the Biggest Loser circuits. I love how it makes me feel. I think I can't do it - then I do it plus more! I sweat and it feels good.... but yet, my diet has not changed. In fact, I have been eating a lot of breads and sweets. It is that little devil sitting on my shoulder syndrome. I notice a huge difference in how i feel and my energy levels thru the day. If I eat too many carbs I feel sluggish and wore out by 1pm. Or I don't sleep as well and I am groggy in the morning. It makes me not want to get up. I need to snap out of this. I know what I want - I just know I have to change more and more each time to reach my goals. It irritates me I am struggling! SNAP OUT OF IT!

Back to the whole shopping dealio... sigh... I associate BCBG with skinny. Well I finally walked into the store and looked around. I didn't even feel like the biggest person in the store. You know what I mean, when you go into a store and the staff looks at you odd because they know there is NO F'ing way you would fit into anything they have there. Well I didn't feel like that at all. In fact, I picked up only 1 dress, tried it on and even the sales person told me how nice it looked. That it was meant for me.... granted he is a sales person but when I called my bf over he stated the same thing. He is very honest and would of told me it looked bad. Well I am now a proud new owner of a BCBG dress! Hot damn!

This shopping trip I also got 2 bangles and a really nice watch. I am loving making outfits instead of just getting dressed. It makes me feel like I am in costume all day. It is very fun and feels great.

I am trying to imagine how it will feel at a smaller size... so maybe that will motivate my ASS IN GEAR!

Goal for this week: Spin tonight! Try for 1 more day of cardio.

Weight for today: My scale is dead. I need batteries for it. (Or a very large bat)

Ideal Me

The perfect and ideal person I want to be....

I want to be that girl who doesn't think she is fat, to know that anything I pick up off the rack will actually fit like a glove, to be that girl in the bathing suit that her gut doesn't hang over as she sits in a beach chair, to wear a tank top and not be worrying about my flabby arms, to grow my own garden full of veggies and fruit trees, to make lemonade from the lemon trees, I want to eat everything organic as possible, to be a wife (one day) that creates a happy and fun home, to have my home feel comfortable and welcoming to anyone who walks in, to stay under 1300 - 1200 calories a day without feeling like I am suffering, to automatically feel the need to do cardio or walk everyday, to be able to sit up straight, to not walk pigeon toed, to never have a sweet tooth craving that controls every second of my day, to know portion control and exactly what a cup of something is without measuring it, to be a wife that can cook different meals thru the week, to bring up my kids (when I have some) without soda as long as possible, to be that person who always asks others how their day was before telling them about mine, to be there for my parents just as much as I am now even when I live away from them, to be able to have patience with the mother in law and show them that love is not a materialistic but unconditional, to be able to have both families over for a Sunday BBQ, to be a fun wife who makes food for the boys then lets them do their thing, to never get into a routine, to always try to be spontaneous and look for adventures, to floss every day like we are suppose to, to take my vitamins without forcing myself, to be tanner all year round, to figure out how I can do chin exercises to get rid of a double chin, to do lunges without falling over....

Milk This!

What milk are you drinking AND is it Healthy for you?

SOY - NOT SO SAFE

It lurks in your cupboards, your cereal, bread, pasta and chips. It's in your refrigerator, in your cheese, condiments, yogurt, sausages, ice cream. It's in those M&M's by the desk, probably in the latte you're drinking right now.

It's soy, and it's now in almost every single processed food we buy at supermarkets and health food stores. As America's favorite "health food," it promises to make us skinny and lower our cholesterol, prevent cancer and reduce menopausal symptoms, put us in a better mood, give us energy. It's the cheap and guilt-free source of protein for millions of vegetarians, the "heart smart" option for carnivores, the infant formula du jour for eco-minded moms. Soy has become one of the America's biggest industries.

And it may be making us sicker than we've ever been. Or so alleges Kaayla Daniel, author of "The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food," an anti-soy treatise released in 2005 by New Trends Publishing.

"People are just starting to wake up to this, to just how serious this all is," says Daniel, who earned her doctorate at the Union Institute and works as a certified nutritionist. "So far, if you look at the studies, you'll start to see that there are only possible benefits of this food, and proven dangers."

For Daniel, the problem exists in the soybean itself, a legume that by nature is chock full of antinutrients and toxins to ward off predators. If eaten in small amounts (say, a few tablespoons every couple of days) these toxins pose no real harm. The trouble occurs when we consume more than 35 grams of soy a day -- a quantity Daniel argues is easily reachable in our modern diet so crammed with soy meats, soy extenders, soy protein and soy emulsifiers, substances so full of estrogens, metals, sugars and additives, so "toxic," that they are posing considerable risks to our collective physical and mental health.

Cancer patients are being warned to avoid foods rich in soy because they can accelerate the growth of tumors.

Soy, which is present in soy beans, soy milk, tofu, tempeh and some breads, contains phyto-oestrogens that mimic the actions of hormones in the body.

ALMOND MILK - STILL NOT SAFE

Does Almond Breeze contain any soy?

Yes. Almond Breeze contains trace amounts of soy in the form of soy lecithin which is derived from soybeans. It is common in many food products and helps to emulsify the natural oils found in almonds to produce a creamy texture. A soy-free version will also be available later this year.

COCONUT MILK - BETTER

For centuries cultures around the world have revered and relied upon coconut for its nutritional powers and infinite practical uses. Native tradition attributes healing and life-giving properties to the fruit-bearing palm, which is why it is often called, ‘Tree of Life’.

In western society, the health benefits of coconuts are just beginning to be understood. The mystery appears to be in the favorable fats found in coconut.

Although coconut contains saturated fat, a closer examination shows that not all saturated fats pose a health problem. Saturated fat chains exist in a variety of lengths which impact the body differently.

Research has demonstrated that Long Chain Triglycerides (LCT) represent the most sinister saturated fat. LCTs exist primarily in foods derived from animals and have been linked to heart disease and a number of other chronic conditions. The body stores LCTs as fat. Americans consume an excess amount of animal-sourced LCT, which drives many of the health problems in this country.

Coconut represents a vegetarian-sourced saturated fat consisting of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA). Scientists have long recognized MCFAs such as lauric and capric acid for their anti-viral and anti-microbial properties. The body utilizes MCFAs as energy instead of storing them as fat.

Biggest Looser Bandwagon

I am not a huge Biggest Looser fan since I don't watch the show on a regular basis. But when I happen to catch it I am sucked in. I am always intrigued to see how they are working out and the things they do - It lead me to purchase the Biggest Looser Fitness book. I was interested in mixing up my workout since I don't like to get board and I feel I need to 'learn' more about how my body reacts. We do a lot of the same weights and machines at the gym. I am now feeling more confident to do my own thing. Hence the book. I don't want to not look like I know what I am doing.

This book has some great circuits in it. Something I don't do much of. But I need to get out of this rut... plateau.. same freakin' spot I have been in for way to long! I made myself I cheat sheet with the list of things I should do each time. I did this before reading the whole book. Therefore I did way to many workouts for each body part and no wonder why I am so sore days and days later. It did feel good though and I kicked some ass doing it. Today I am going back and re-doing my cheat sheet so it makes more sense. Derrr...

Plateau has always been an interesting word to me. I hate it but want to understand it more. Jillian Michaels of Biggest Looser states that she doesn't believe in plateaus. It is simple math. Calories in, Calories out. We have to pay attention to how much our body needs to use thru the day so we can find our calorie deficits between 800 -1000 per day. Lucky me, I have a BodyMedia Arm back which calculates this for me. We have to constantly change our work out so our body is challenged and continually keep loosing weight. I have not done this. I learned one thing and stuck with it - but just becoming more aware I need to keep up the challenge. Gotta up my game!

Today, I am reading The Biggest Looser Fitness book and Jillian Micheals' Unlimited. I hope to learn more about how I can push myself to get this scale moving. Also a  suggestion is to listen to Jillian's podcast. I don't listen to the whole conversation but only the fitness sections. She kinda rants about things that are random after the health/fitness section.

Still looking for motivation and courage to go to Cardio Kick boxing class. Sigh...

Goal for this week: Update circuit cheat sheet and laminate them. Maybe I will post them to the blog once I have them ready.

Social Drinking & Eating

I seem to be moving  between a 2-3 pound gain/loss the past few weeks. It goes down a few pounds and I feel right on track - then the next day it is back up 1 - 2- 3 pounds and then I am just not happy.

I feel really great about my progress during the week days. I feel in a schedule and routine that I like. I have 1 - 2 shakes a day as meal replacements. I eat fruit and try to eat a protein dinner. Then on the weekends I don't have that schedule at all. I do eat a breakfast, a shake then just have a dinner. I sleep in later so I don't feel the need to eat a lunch.

I need to find that right balance. Some days I have it. Then some days I don't. Being conscious of this everyday is very hard. It comes a lot more natural than it did at first. It became easier and the weight just came off so easy. Now, one and a half years later I still struggle with this. I am looking for an easy fix to keep moving forward but I feel there is this wall that I just keep tying to get over, I keep struggling, I keep falling, but yet I feel like I am hitting the wall each time... over and over... It makes me so mad at myself that I haven't really gone down much. Not sure why it isn't sinking in my head or in my routine. Each day is different and how I feel about myself.

Social eating is always a hard one. I try to make it so it isn't noticeable that I am eating less than everyone. But yet someone always mentions that I am not eating very much or why I am not eating. It is hard being out and not really drinking with my friends. I used to feel very comfortable drinking a few beers- knowing my limits - then driving home after sobering up. Now it takes me a long time to feel sober to drive. So I prefer to not even drink at all. I like to say in certain circumstances that I am the designated driver. 85% of the time it is true. But before I would have one beer and be in the mix and having fun. There is this urge to still have a drink in my hand. This weekend I discovered San Pellegrino Aranciata Orange Soda. It could be a nice alternative to typical soda if one hard that urge. I poured it into a cup so it looked like I had a mixed drink. It seemed to work.

Here is the nutritional information...
I ate so many appetizers at a party this weekend that I didn't feel hungry to even eat my dinner. Even though I had stood in line to put food on my plate, put enough on my plate to fill it up, then sat down and didn't touch it. I felt bad waisting the food but I felt powerful to know when to stop. It was definitely a NSV- Me against food. I know I need to find that limit for social events because I still love to hang out and go do dinners with friends. I don't want to be a social outcast and loose those connections. Just need to keep making mental notes of it to keep me focused in front of temptations.

And yes, I am still working on the no-carb rule. Been a little 'flexible' last week. But refocusing and going to do it. Also contemplating a 3 day cleanse.

Goal this week: FOCUS

Weight for today: 199.2

I Can See The Light

I am trying to remember what it felt like to be heavier... It seems like a faded memory but is slowly becoming harder to remember.

- I had to grip the steering wheel to pull myself out of the car
- Tying my shoes (oh wait I always wore flip flops since I hated not being able to breathe bending over)
- Having people give me quick hugs since they couldn't get their arms completely around me
- How my shirts always bunched up on my back side and how long they looked on the hanger - but they looked short on me since my tummy used all the fabric to cover it
- I had to extend my arms further out to be able to grab a box and carry it in front of the boobs
- Not being able to cross my legs like a girl - I could cross my legs but it was more like how a guy can
- I was always the funny girl who felt in the shadows of her friends
- If things were shitty I would comfort myself with hitting up a junk food drive thru
- I thought it was okay just to be present not part of things
- I thought being on prescription medicines was the way of life

I wondered what I would feel like down the line once I was banded. I always wanted to be a certain person in my mind. But today I am somewhat the person I want to be. I am still not there 100%. I wonder if I will ever be that 'perfect' image of myself. Today, I can tell you I am trying my hardest to get there. Today, I am a hell of a lot better person, stronger, passionate, caring and very thankful for those around me. Life is such a precious gift and not to be taken for granted. I know that some of my friendships have faded but I also feel that those who have stuck with me - our relationships have grown. These people make me stronger. I couldn't of gone this far and been this disciplined if I didn't have those people around.

Each day is hard. It is a constant battle to count calories. To be 100% accountable for my actions and consequences. It is hard to find a healthy mindset when being tempted. But being banded is helping me get to this 'perfect' person I so much want to be. I know she is in reach now. This person is who motivates me and who I see in my head when I need to step it up at the gym or my mindset. When I need that little boost.

What is it that motivates you?
Who do you see in your head?

Right now I am trying to get down to a size 12 so I can buy some new clothes. To loose 10 pounds before my vacation in July. To feel good about myself and how I look at my brother's wedding in November - I want to knock'em dead when I see my family and friends. I also feel like even though I have not lost much weight for a LONG time now I am still improving my strength mentally and physically. I am also trying to have better posturer - I hunch over when I sit at my desk all day. I have tummy muscles now, So I need to use them. The light is getting easier to see at the end of my tunnel. I just have to stay on track and I will eventually get there.

Goal for this week: Keep being positive and strong at the gym. Don't let the fat girl mentality ruin a good day.

Shootin' Hoops and Eatin' Dogs

Things are definitely going in the right direction for not just one week but now 2 weeks.... I am keeping up with my new protein shakes. I managed to get a 3-day cleanse in - even thought I did it wrong. I will need to do it over again. But having a thicker shake instead of the usual protein shakes I was drinking is really helping me stay focused, full and motivated. Three things that are a must! I plan to do the 'real' cleanse in a few weeks. I am really being diligent about sticking under my 1300 calorie diet.

As for the working out, I am pushing myself harder at the gym still. I started to do running intervals to increase my heart rate and burn higher calories. It helps! Plus it keeps me from getting bored on the treadmill. I keep attending the Tuesday Spin class even though the instructor sucks. I just do what I feel is right when she does something that isn't correct. I also take what she is doing and push myself harder or add more resistance. So far so good. It is kicking my ass and I am am honestly there for ME not the instructor... so I have to do my part. I don't see how an instructor who is so bad has a prime time for her class... 6:15pm on weekdays!?!

Funny work out story.... My boyfriend asked me to shoot hoops with him at the gym before going to run on treadmills. Well short version.... I ended up with getting hit with the basketball as it came down rebounding off the rim... TO MY FACE.... right between the eyes as I was looking up. I was trying to get the 1st ball that was shot since we were rotating between the 2 basketballs - not seeing he had already thrown the 2nd ball.... Luckily it didn't break my $400 pair of glasses just slammed against face instead! I have a swollen face right between the eyes, bump on my nose and 2 black eyes. And yes, I cried like a baby in public. It hurt that bad but the story is pretty funny today.

I was able to climb the steep stairs at the baseball stadium all the way up to our nose bleed seats without panting! I also was able to walk all around downtown that night without being tired. We walked over 12,000 steps! I wore my BodyMedia arm band to the game.... so I can count how much we walked per hot dog, 1 cup of nachos and 3 light beer consumed. It seemed to balance out since I didn't gain anything on my weight in this morning. The guy next to me asked why I was eating my hot dog so slow. I literally took 10 minutes to eat it. Granted, I was savoring it and all its calories... but I was having a hard time eating it without some resistance to my band. Think it was the bread. Since I didn't want to blurt out that I was having this problem... I just told him that since I had been thinking about the damn hot dog and having one a the game all day - that I wanted to savor it so it would last. Then he proceeds to tell me recently entered a hot dog eating contest but lost!?!

I needed this crazy chaos and fun since I have been so stressed with work and I need to chill the hell out so my blood pressure can go down. Yoga anyone?

Goal for this week: Keep it up and void playing basketball with my face!

In the Right Direction

Today is a great day, I am down a few pounds from last week. I weighted in today at 196.4! This is such a great feeling to see the scale moving and to see in my BodyFit Media log that when it states "weight loss trend" that it really is accurate. Yey me!

Since my last post I have been on a no carb plan. Which means so no bread/white carbs and limited my fruit intake. But I figured that eating fruit is a must and even though the 4 hour Body suggests no fruit. I well, have been eating some fruit here and there. I made it thru most of the last week without carbs.. except for Saturday's Cinco de Mayo celebration festival. I ate a whole basket full of tortilla chips with salsa and a rolled taco. I also celebrated with a Mango margarita. I only had one. But the next day I went right back to no carbs.

Yesterday I received my Shakeology shipment. I ordered Chocolate and Greenberry mixes. Granted it was not cheap to buy both. But I wanted to be able to not get bored with only one flavor. They are about $110 each for 30 servings. I might need to limit myself with these shakes so I can make them last longer. But we will see how it goes. The company you buy these shake mixes from match you up with a Beach Body Coach. Mine, happens to be someone I know. Its kinda like an Avon rep. ha ha ha Anyhow she suggested I do a cleanse right when I first start drinking these shakes. I had been wanting to do a cleanse anyhow .... so why not use something that I already have. It consists of 1 shake 3x's a day, with fruits/veggies/nuts for snacks. Today is my first day. Sounds easy enough.

I saw my general doctor last week for an annual. Joy. She was very concerned with my blood pressure. It was at Stage 2 levels. Wholly Shit! Not good. I have to monitor it for 3 weeks and then go back to her for a follow up. The reason why she didn't put me on meds right then and their was that I told her I didn't want to be on any meds again. I have worked really hard to not be that unhealthy person anymore. Going back on BP meds is a slap in the face. I know it would only be temporary but it is my pride. I have monitored my BP for one week - it is high. I might just have to suck it up. But I have 2 more weeks to keep tracking it so maybe it will turn in my favor. I have been going to this doctor for a few years now, she is nice, always seems in a hurry... but once i told her I was considering weight loss surgery - she proceeded to ask me a bunch of questions about if it is right for me or not. Each time I am there she asks me questions about how things are going. Her tone when she asks me questions, I get the feeling she is anti-weight loss surgery. I just tell her how happy I am and i feel it was the right choice for me. Then she moves onto the next subject. Interesting. So with my blood pressure, I hope to have it under control and stop stressing about and being a worry wart. I worry about everything and anything - even things that are out of my control. Lately it has been mainly with work projects and a few things in my personal life.

Goal for this week : Finish cleanse and keep up with water

Back On Track

A getaway was definitely needed. I got out of town for a relaxing weekend away. Relaxed, Read, Cooked healthy no carb meals... and basically recharged myself for this week. It has been very stressful at work. I am a stress eater and I am trying to make better choices when I am in that mode. I am always on the go and need a quick snack to tide me over or something quick to grab on my way out the door. The past week or so I have been making my Egg Minis. It is a spin off from a SouthBeach diet recipe. It makes cute little cupcake sized egg quiches. Perfect for breakfast and on the go. Very easy to make ahead since it makes 6 qty in the tray I use.

I also made an effort to make a small healthy snack for when I am so busy I forget to eat and then I get famished and want anything and everything bad for me. I made Roasted Chickpeas. Again, very easy to make and make ahead. I found that you have to cook them until they aren't soft in the middle, if not then they are too dry for me to eat and kinda get stuck. The crispier the better. Here are the recipes....

Egg Minis
Ingredients
1 cartoon of egg white liquid
1 cup chopped fresh spinach
1 Morning Farms Veggie Sausage Patty (chopped)
salt / pepper to taste

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Divide Spinach and Sausage into cupcake tray (I used a 6 qty tray for larger minis). Pour egg white liquid into each spot and do not fill since when cooking it will expand. Cook for 20 minutes or until egg is cooked thru. Cool tray and remove egg minis.

Roasted Chickpeas
  • Ingredients
  • 1 (12 ounce) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt (optional)
  • garlic salt (optional)
  • cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Directions
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Blot chickpeas with a paper towel to dry them. In a bowl, toss chickpeas with olive oil, and season to taste with salt, garlic salt, and cayenne pepper, if using. Spread on a baking sheet, and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until browned and crunchy. Watch carefully the last few minutes to avoid burning.

I was also recommended to try Shakeology. This is a super shake. A protein shake on crack. It has so many vitamins and such. It doesn't have caffeine which I liked and also 17grams of protein and under 200 calories. The bad part is that a bag of 30 servings runs about $110. I tried a sample yesterday of the chocolate flavor mix. It tasted like cake, very yummy cake. It kept me full so long and it also gave me lots of energy thru my whole day. With the Premiere Protein Shakes I usually drink, It fills me up but not as long as the Shakeology. I ended up buying 2 bags to get me thru a few months. Check out Shakeology for more information.

I am turning my crappy mindset into a positive one and so far I have stuck to my no carb plan for over a week. The only thing didn't rule out was soy milk for my protein shakes. But I have kept my calories below what I am allowed and also keeping track on my BodyMedia Fit program too. I may of found a good ratio going. The fill I got last week is working out very well. I am eating less and getting full quicker. I just have to eat the right density in the foods and I feel it. Fingers crossed.

We finally booked our trip to Maui for 7 days! It will be in mind July. And I am so excited. time to get crackin' cause I want to be able to eat whatever I want guilt free that whole week and look good in my bathing suit again. 70+ days and counting.

Goal for this week: Keep up No Carbs! Stay under 1300 Calories.

Weight for today: 199 (Yey the scale is moving again)

Thanks for baring with me!
